Introducing the 365Scores Impact Rating (IR): Measuring a Player’s Influence on Their Team

At 365Scores, we’ve developed an innovative way to measure a player’s IMPACT on their team during a match. The Impact Rating (IR) goes beyond just goals and assists by evaluating a player’s influence through a special formula based on attacking, defending, and goalkeeping actions. These actions are then multiplied by how often they occurred in a game to give the player a score that reflects their contribution to their team.

Why the Impact Rating Is Different

The Impact Rating isn’t about ranking players as “better” or “worse” than each other. Instead, it focuses on measuring how much IMPACT a player has on their team’s performance. This is important because the impact a player has can vary greatly depending on the team they play for and the role they fulfil.

The Impact Rating helps highlight the players who truly influence the match, not just those with the most goals or assists.

How the Impact Rating Identifies a Successful Team

A successful team typically has multiple players ranked highly in the Impact Rating, reflecting a balanced contribution. In contrast, a struggling team often relies on one key player who carries most of the load. In a well-performing team, at least one player will have a high attacking impact, and another will excel defensively. This balance highlights the collective strength of the team. On the other hand, teams that struggle may see a One-Man Army having to shoulder much of the responsibility, either offensively or defensively. The Impact Rating thus helps identify the genuine contributors in a team, showing how a player’s influence can define a team’s success or failure, especially in critical areas like attack and defense.

Regarding goalkeepers, the Impact Rating allows us to understand their involvement in the game. In less successful teams, the goalkeeper will often have more participation, and if they are impactful, they could help the team avoid relegation. The team is at greater risk of relegation if the goalkeeper’s impact is low. Similarly, for bottom-tier teams, if their defensive players don’t have high impact ratings, their chances of relegation will be higher compared to other teams in the same situation.

How the Impact Rating Works

The Impact Rating uses a unique formula to assess a player’s influence on their team. Instead of relying on traditional 1-10 ratings, the more actions a player makes, the more impact they have on the game – and the higher their score will be. We measure all the players’ actions and then multiply them by the frequency of their occurrence in the match. All actions appear on the player card in the 365Scores app. This allows us to assess a player’s total impact, not just in scoring goals or providing assists, but by considering every action that affects the team’s success.

What You Can Learn from the Impact Rating

  • Team Strategy and Formations: The Impact Rating can show which players have the most influence in different game areas. Depending on their tactical needs, teams can use this information to understand the best combinations of players in attack, defense, or goalkeeping.
  • Scouting: Not all impactful players score the most goals or make the flashiest plays. Some players contribute with subtle but crucial actions, such as intercepting passes, making key tackles, or blocking shots. The Impact Rating allows you to spot these players, who may often be overlooked, but are key to a team’s success.
  • Minutes Played and Substitutes: The Impact Rating can help teams decide which players deserve more playing time. For example, a player who makes a significant impact per minute might be a better substitute to bring on during critical moments, while others may be more suited to starting every match.
  • Player Consistency: By measuring impact across multiple games or an entire season, teams can assess which players consistently deliver high-level performances and which only perform sporadically

What the Impact Rating Measures

The Impact Rating evaluates three key aspects of a player’s performance, for example:

  1. Attacking Impact: Goals, Assists, xG, Total Shots, Shots on Target, xG ON Target, Shots OFF Target, Chances Missed, Penalty Missed, Offsides, Possession Lost, Hit Woodwork, Penalty Won, xA, Key Passes, Big Chances Created, Passes Success %, Crosses Success %, Long Balls Success %, Dribbles Success %, Final Third Entries, Touches, Was Fouled.
  2. Defending Impact: Cards, Shots Blocked, Own Goals, Tackles Failed, Tackles Won, Interceptions, Clearances, Fouls Made, Penalty Committed, Ground Duels Success %, Aerial Duels Success %, Dribbled Past, Error Led To Shot, Error Led To Goal, Clean Sheet.
  3. Goalkeeping Impact: Shots Blocked, Saves, Goals Conceded, Tackles Success %, Clearances, Interceptions, Fouls Made, Punches, Penalty Saved, Touches, Penalty Committed, High Claims, Saves Inside Box, xG Conceded, xG Prevented.

Formula:
Overall Rating = Defensive Rating + Attacking Rating

The rating of each player is composed of their defensive rating plus their attacking rating, which together form their overall rating. For goalkeepers, the goalkeeper rating is also added to their overall rating.
