Liverpool vs Tottenham Preview – Will Slot send Igor Tu-the-Dor?

Liverpool versus Tottenham rarely behaves like a routine Premier League fixture. Over the years it has produced chaos, late drama, controversial moments and more goals than any other matchup in the competition’s history.

This meeting arrives with both clubs under pressure, though in very different ways. Liverpool are still trying to stabilise a season that has lurched between impressive performances and frustrating setbacks. Tottenham, meanwhile, are, make no mistake about it, navigating a relegation battle defined by injuries, catastrophic form and a growing sense that the margins around them are tightening.

That contrast gives Sunday’s game a strange tension. Liverpool want momentum and a statement performance in front of their home crowd. Tottenham simply need something to steady a season that has begun to drift.

Team News

Liverpool’s squad is gradually regaining some stability, although there are still a few uncertainties heading into the weekend. The biggest positive is the potential return of Alisson Becker, who has been dealing with a minor muscular issue. His presence would immediately raise the floor of Liverpool’s defensive structure and provide the calm that has occasionally been missing in recent matches.

Federico Chiesa is also expected to return after illness, giving Liverpool another attacking option on the wing.

Tottenham’s injury situation is considerably more complicated. Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha are both unavailable after suffering a clash of heads during the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Yves Bissouma is also out with a muscular issue, removing another key piece of Tottenham’s midfield engine. Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Mohamed Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Rodrigo Bentancur remain out for the long term.

To make matters worse, Micky van de Ven is suspended after his red card against Crystal Palace. The defensive spine Spurs would normally rely upon is therefore missing several pillars. Conor Gallagher has recently been ill but could be involved in some capacity, while Destiny Udogie is nearing a return but may not be ready to start.

Recent form, including Europe

Liverpool’s recent form has been inconsistent enough to keep the conversation around their season unsettled. A narrow 1–0 win away to Nottingham Forest demonstrated Liverpool’s ability to grind out results, while a 5–2 victory over West Ham at Anfield showcased their attacking depth. They also progressed in the FA Cup with a confident 3–1 win at Wolves.

Yet those positives sit alongside reminders that the team has not fully found its rhythm. In between, Liverpool were beaten 2–1 by Wolves in the league and lost 1–0 away to Galatasaray in the Champions League. Both games highlighted moments where concentration dipped and control slipped away.

Tottenham’s recent run has been much harsher. They’ve now lost six in a row for the first time in the club’s history. League form has seen them struggle to build momentum, with a series of defeats leaving them searching for confidence. Defensive organisation has been a recurring issue, particularly when opponents attack quickly through the middle.

Their European campaign also took a hit with a heavy 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Key Stats

  • Liverpool’s dominance at Anfield in this fixture is remarkable. The Reds have lost just once in their last 31 home league matches against Tottenham (21 wins, 9 draws) and are unbeaten in the last 14 since Spurs’ 2–0 victory at Anfield in May 2011.
  • Recent head-to-head form heavily favours Liverpool. Tottenham have won only one of the last 16 Premier League meetings between the sides, with Liverpool winning 12 of those matches and taking victory in each of the last four.
  • No Premier League fixture has produced more goals. Liverpool vs Tottenham is the highest-scoring matchup in the competition’s history with 209 total goals, 127 of which have been scored by Liverpool.
  • Tottenham have struggled badly for form in 2026. Spurs are the only Premier League side yet to record a league win this calendar year, drawing four and losing seven of their 11 matches.
  • Liverpool’s games often explode after half-time. While their first halves have produced relatively few goals, second halves in Liverpool matches this season have generated a league-high 59 goals (32 scored and 27 conceded).

Key Tactical Battles

The midfield battle may ultimately shape the direction of the game. Liverpool have increasingly leaned on a dynamic attacking midfielder to bridge the space between build-up play and the final third. That role allows them to maintain pressure around the edge of the penalty area and sustain attacking sequences.

Tottenham’s current injuries leave their midfield structure vulnerable to overloads. Without several of their usual ball-winning players, Spurs may struggle to prevent Liverpool from recycling possession and creating repeated attacking waves.

Set pieces could also prove decisive. Liverpool have become more dangerous from dead-ball situations this season, using creative delivery and movement to attack the penalty area. Against a reshuffled Tottenham defence, those moments may offer valuable opportunities.

Key player: Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai has become one of Liverpool’s most influential players this season. His energy, shooting ability and creativity allow Liverpool to maintain attacking momentum in central areas.

Across all competitions this season he has reached double figures for goals while also contributing a steady stream of assists. Don’t forget his filthy free-kicks as well. More importantly, his ability to arrive late into attacking spaces often forces defenders to make difficult decisions.

If Liverpool dominate possession, Szoboszlai is likely to be the player linking midfield pressure to scoring opportunities.

Key player: Dominic Solanke

It’s the day of the Doms. Solanke remains Tottenham’s most consistent attacking threat. His movement across the front line allows Spurs to stretch defences, and his ability to finish quickly makes him dangerous even when Tottenham are creating only a handful of chances.

This season, although injured for a long stretch, he has shown what he is capable of, especially through a superb showing against Manchester City.

If Tottenham are to trouble Liverpool defensively, it will probably involve Solanke finding space during fast attacking transitions.
