Understanding the New League Phase Format
Introduced in the 2024/25 season, the league phase replaced the traditional group stage. The tournament expanded from 32 to 36 teams, all competing in a single league table. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents—four at home and four away. The top eight teams automatically qualify for the knockout stage, while teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff to secure a spot in the Round of 16. Teams finishing 25th or lower are eliminated from European competition.
